Wind River Platform for Consumer Devices provides developers with a Device Software Optimization (DSO) solution that supports the two leading operating systems for device development, VxWorks and Linux, each with a separate edition of the platform. Both versions of Platform for Consumer Devices are tightly integrated with Wind River Workbench, the premier Eclipse-based device software development suite, and are backed by Wind River's 25 years of device software experience, a broad network of hardware and software partners, a world-class support organization, and a specialized professional services team.

Both versions of Platform for Consumer Devices offer companies a fast-boot, small-footprint, run-time environment ideal for memory-constrained devices. The platform has been optimized for consumer devices and includes industry-specific, integrated run-time technologies, enabling companies to decrease time-to-market while focusing engineering resources on differentiating, value-add features. Platform for Consumer Devices is targeted for digital video, mobile handheld, digital imaging, and broadband access devices. The platform offers multiple processor support and operating system flexibility, allowing developers to standardize on a single, comprehensive development suite and migrate easily from project to project.

Key features and functionality include the following:

  • Linux run-time: Platform for Consumer Devices, Linux Edition is based on a Linux 2.6.14 kernel implementation. It includes integrated patches and packages for enhanced networking and security requirements, as well as CELF specifications for fast boot-up time, a small footprint, and performance features and functionality. The platform offers a "pristine source" distribution that gives maximum visibility into which packages and patches have been applied. The platform's distribution also provides a unique, intuitive build system for building and installing the Linux kernel as needed. Platform for Consumer Devices, Linux Edition comes fully tested and validated on industry-specific hardware. Enhanced networking capabilities are available with the Wind River Advanced Networking Technologies for Linux add-on.
  • VxWorks run-time: Platform for Consumer Devices, VxWorks Edition relies on the proven, stringent, and deterministic real-time operating system successfully deployed in millions of network equipment devices worldwide. The platform's integrated run-time technologies provide process support, advanced memory protection, and configurable error management, as well as increased POSIX compliance and TIPC. Platform for Consumer Devices integrates Wind River Advanced Networking Technologies, providing the latest standard support for IPv4/IPv6, Wi-Fi, security protocols, and device management. It also meets current demand for performance, security, wireless, and mobility functionality. Symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) support is now available for all VxWorks 6.6-based platforms through the VxWorks 6.6 SMP optional add-on product
  • Wind River Workbench: An integrated development suite based on the Eclipse framework, Workbench provides deep capabilities that support the entire development life cycle, from hardware bring-up to platform and application development, and enables standardization on one common development suite across the enterprise. Workbench is extensible and scalable, allowing developers to meet specific project needs. It can seamlessly integrate hundreds of third-party plug-ins.
  • Predictable, reliable product delivery: Both versions of the platform are released twice a year, in the spring and in the fall. Releases include new capabilities, hardware support, and bug-fixes, providing a timely introduction of new features and updates.
  • Extensive partner technologies: To ensure a complete range of integrated technologies, Wind River has established the DSO industry's widest-ranging partner ecosystem, joining forces with leading hardware and software providers to address such technologies as advanced file systems, graphics, Java, multimedia protocols, reference designs, and board support packages (BSPs).
